Start with the water, early

Grayton Beach State Park and Deer Lake State Park are our go-to picks for Labor Day weekend, they're quieter than the main beach accesses, the dune walkovers are gorgeous, and you're not fighting for a spot on the sand by 10:30.
Local honesty check: September is peak hurricane season for the Gulf Coast. It doesn't mean your trip is in danger, most years pass without incident, but check the forecast daily, and always look at the flag flying at your beach access before you get in the water. Double red means stay out, no exceptions, no matter how calm it looks.
Float, don't fight, the crowd at Crab Island
If you're one of our regulars, you already know: Crab Island in Destin is our flagship for a reason. It's the shallow sandbar just north of the Destin Bridge where boats raft up, kids float on noodles, and somebody's always got music playing a little too loud (in the best way). Rent a pontoon or book a shuttle boat in advance, walk-up availability will be slim by Saturday.

Saturday morning: Seaside Farmers Market
Every Saturday, 9am–1pm, rain or shine, the Seaside Amphitheater fills up with local growers, bakers, and a solo guitarist keeping the whole thing feeling unhurried. On September 5, expect it to be a little fuller than usual with holiday visitors, but that's part of the charm, grab a coffee, let the kids run the open lawn, and pick up something for a beach picnic later. It's the kind of low-key morning that reminds you why people fall in love with this stretch of coast.
Sunday night: pick one concert, not both
Two free outdoor concerts are scheduled for Sunday, September 6, Alys Beach's Red, White & Blues Concert (6–8pm at the Amphitheater) and a Seaside concert (7–8:30pm) just down the road. They overlap, and 30A traffic on a holiday Sunday evening is not something you want to test twice in one night. Our advice: pick one, arrive early with a blanket or low chairs, and treat the other town to a daytime visit instead. Parking at Alys Beach fills up fast during events, so budget extra time to park legally and walk in.

A few honest things to know before you go
Traffic is real. 30A is one road. Holiday weekends back it up, especially around Seaside, WaterColor, and the Highway 98 intersections. Build in extra time for anywhere you're headed.
Book restaurants ahead. Walk-in tables are tough to find Friday through Sunday night. If there's a dinner you care about, reserve it now.
Grocery runs early. Publix and the local markets get picked over fast on holiday weekends, do your big shop Thursday or early Friday if you can.
Rip currents pick up this time of year. Check flags daily, not just once at check-in.
Golf cart and parking rules are enforced, especially in the town centers. Read your rental's rules, tickets do happen.
